The Kent Stage was filled with the foot-stomping and sweet sounds of old-time and Celtic music during the first annual Ohio Cascade Music Festival, which featured three popular area folk acts: Crabapple, Lisa and Heather Malyuk and the Brick Road Ramblers.
Guitarist/singer Crabapple has been a fixture at area folk venues, where he lends his distinctive vocals and picking to a wide range of genres, including Appalachian, country western and blues. When joined by the Malyuk sisters on hammered dulcimer and violin, the three performers create signature arrangements of traditional tunes. Lisa and Heather Malyuk (dulcimer, violin and guitar) receive local airplay and perform at festivals throughout the region. Their live performances are a true feast for the hammered dulcimer connoisseur.
The Brick Road Ramblers, a four-member string band, are eight-year veterans of the local folk circuit. Featuring banjo, fiddle, guitar, dobro, mandolin, concertina, and stand-up bass, BRR shows are packed with traditional tunes and popular songs done with an old-time twist. Their three CDs—Porch Music, Live at Lock 3, and Medina Rose—have garnered them local and national airplay and devoted fans who are lovers of string band music and four-part harmonies. It was a hand-clapping, rousing good time!
